great base to use if you hire a car and want to explore some of the ancient and historic monuments on the mainland nearby, like Epidavros, Ancient Corinth and the canal, Mikines (Mycaenae), the old Greek capital city of Naphlion etc etc, not to mention the Nemea area for the wine route and the cheap wine you can buy at the wineries by the water bottle full for pennies, and of course drive to Ermioni on a Thursday, for the big market and explore other holiday areas whilst your driving around the coast to it and beyond too. There are so many places to go to on the Pelloponese, you don't realise you can get to them, and return in a day quite easily.

Hi Steve,

Thankyou so much for that cos thats exactly what I plan to do at Easter time (in the second week once all the celebrations out of the way .....of course!) Have been reading guide books and just cant wait to explore cos I been many times to poros but always when its been hot. I plan to spend a whole week with a car and getting over to the mainland and into the pellopenese. Reading the above has wet my appetite even more. Can you get to the north west corner in a day, or would you advise an overnight stay?

Estimate how long you think it will take, then double it. Apart from the motorway to Patras, travelling is quite slow because of mountain roads, average speed is only about 50 - 60 kms./hr. We have travelled extensively around Greece. Monemvasia, not far on the map but takes about 4 hrs. Meteora to the north, one of our favorites, is about 4 - 5 hrs. Its well worth getting Rough Guide or Lonley Planet Greece. We have found their hotel recommendations very good, and out of mid summer plenty of availability.

I looked into this a few weeks ago and couldn't see either in their booking system or on their PDF schedule lists anything direct from Scotland either as Aegean or any of the partners - my guess is those are also via Heathrow.

Anyone know any better?

Seconded on the easyJet MAN - ATH, fortunate enough to have done it twice this year (as it worked out) and it was great - the only slight downside for us is the 5hr coach to and from MAN. but we gotta go with what we can afford.

Did you use the Wednesday or Sunday service as I believe the times are different?

Hey Chelle, if you want the NW corner and around ancient Olympia area, then I would look for a small hotel and stay overnight as it is quite a long drive. Worth it though if your into your history.
